Community Fellowship

Ocean Hill-Brownsville Coalition of Young Professionals (CYP) Community Fellowship is a unique opportunity for individuals pursuing studies in civic engagement, public administration, public health, or urban planning who are seeking to work with groups and individuals exploring public interest matters and improved outcomes for community residents through the lens of social justice and equity, and concerning the social determinants of health and equal opportunity for all.  

The selected Fellow will support an organization matched by CYP that serves the Ocean Hill and/or Brownsville neighborhoods of Brooklyn, home to approximately 125,000 residents.  

Founded in 2011 by a group of young professionals wanting to effect change in our neighborhood, CYP set out with the mission: 

"To improve Ocean Hill-Brownsville by using our professional resources to make the community a viable place  to live, work and socialize through partnerships with existing organizations working within the community,  professional, personal and community development, and philanthropy." 

The Fellow will work closely with a designated liaison of the matched organization to help advance the community priorities identified by the organization and CYP related to, i.e., Civic Engagement/Policy  Development, Youth Development, Economic Development, Housing/Homelessness, Public Safety,  Environment, etc. 

The successful Applicant should: 

  • Have a passion for advocacy and community development 

  • Work well independently and in group settings 

  • Be detail-oriented and well organized 

  • Possess interpersonal skills 

  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 

  • Have strong computer skills and can use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and  Adobe Photoshop a plus but not required

The Fellow responsibilities may be as follows: 

  • Serve a minimum of 90 hours between July 5 to August 12, 2022

  • Fulfill position description requirements and matched organization expectations

  • Attend and participate in community events/meetings

  • Complete weekly timesheets

Requirements: 

  • Proof of residency in Ocean Hill or Brownsville i.e. Photo ID, bill with mailing address, etc.  

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

  • Be able to travel throughout the Ocean Hill-Brownsville community

  • Up to 20 hours per week for 6 weeks with an exact schedule coordinated with the worksite from July 5, 2022 to August 12, 2022.

Compensation:

  •  $20/hr paid bi-weekly
